A LANGUAGE OF MOTIFS

Some time ago newspapers reported that there is only one man left in the world who speaks a certain language and that when he dies the language will be forever lost. It will not be, the first or the last language to be lost, but it is sad to know it happens. Turkish weavers are not quite so close to the loss of the language of motif and colour, but there is concern that the end may not be too many years hence.

Producers and distributors produce in factories or in cottage industry situations most new carpets and kilims where the motifs and colours are dictated. The colours and motifs are being changed to suit the Western market and its influence. To be a success in the market place, the product must suit the colours and furniture styles used by a different culture. Small woven signs or symbols are called motifs and the overall pattern is called the design.

As one deciphers the symbols of a small prayer rug one discovers, for example the unbearable agony of losing a child; the grief is as real and as fresh as when the weaver knotted the patterns of her sorrow over forty years ago and one becomes intensely aware of the human expression in the carpet or kilim. Working on such a carpet becomes a kind of supreme communication reaching out to God and men in one spontaneous proclamation.

There are also happy kilims and carpets telling of joy and dreams of lasting happiness though always with an understanding of fate's fickle ways. There may be embedded in the evil eye repeated throughout the carpet or kilim. Whether an eight square meter kilim for the long winter or a shopping bag to carry to market, the kilim is always an expression of the artistic skills of the weaver and a public message to the world of the family's own history.

The nomad woman did not have to leave home or change her life style to find herself. With her weaving she could make a statement that would outlast her own lifetime and possibly those of her children and grandchildren. It would be seen by family, friends and visitors for generations and might even end up in the home of some Western stranger. She would have been proud to have them exclaimed over her clever design, colour sense and weaving skill. If they could not read the message she had written so clearly in the colour and motifs she had used, they could at least appreciate her beautiful work.

To own a carpet or kilim means two things. Firstly, it is having a beautifully crafted piece of art, with harmonious colours and exciting patterns, with which to decorate the house. Secondly, it is like taking a page out of an Anatolian native's life, a page out of a history of a rich, though sadly dyeing tradition. For those who enjoy the art of old nomadic pieces and would like to learn a little of there language, the following basic motif vocabulary is provided.

STATUS OF WEAVER

HAIR BAND(Single)

mm22.jpg (10238 bytes)mm23.jpg (9688 bytes)This sign expresses the yearning of a young woman to get married. Traditionally in Anatolian villages the girls keep their hair long and ill not cut it until they get marriede.

YING AND YANG (Married)

mm13.jpg (12417 bytes)mm20.jpg (12473 bytes)This motif signifies that the weaver is married as well as love and unity. Inherited from the Far East, this symbol denotes love and unity between a man and woman. A dot of the opposite colour in each half shows that nothing is pure in nature.

HANDS ON HIPS(Mother)

mm16.jpg (8916 bytes)The mother Goddess of ancient Matriarchal beliefs. At an early stage all superhuman powers were represented by goddesse. This motif is only shown when the weaver gives a birth to a boy. The hands on hips shows that she is very proud. Motifs such as evil eye and ram's horn signify that the weaver is happy and she is thanking God for her happiness.

HAPPINESS

EYE (Evil Eyes)

mm17.jpg (7944 bytes)mm18.jpg (8530 bytes)mm12.jpg (9134 bytes)This signifies a bad or nasty look that is believed to be encountered by an object which looks similar to an eye. In its most simplified form a triangle is used.

RAM'S HORN

mm25.jpg (8267 bytes)mm3k.jpg (9462 bytes)The ram's horn denotes fertility, heroism and power.

The chest, comb, fetter and fertility motifs express a weaver's relationship with her husband and her in - laws.

RELATIONSHOPS

CHEST COMB

mm27.jpg (8738 bytes)mm29.jpg (7447 bytes)mm28.jpg (9541 bytes)The chest and comb motifs are symbols of the bride, marriage and happiness in Anatolian folklore. SOME BEAUTY FROM TURKEY

The Bodrum peninsula ....outside the town
- plenty of places to enjoy!

Turgutreis
You find this little town at the western tip of the peninsula. Named after the famous admiral, Turgut Reis, this is a *stroll* town in its own right and combines a compact town center with several long sandy beaches. This part of the coast is favored by professional wind surfers as the winds are generally strong.
Regular buses connect Turgutreis with Bodrum, and in high season coaches for Istanbul and Ankara leave from the Turgutreis bus station.
Kadikalesi, is next to Turgutreis and offers some of the finest holiday resorts.

Gündogan

Only a few minutes West of Yalikavak a place that can be really called peaceful. It is little village which is still more or less unspoiled despite the holiday developments on the surrounding hills. Here in the North of the peninsula a fresh breeze often comes . A reason why many surfers prefer this bay.

Gümüslük
Gümüs is the Turkish word for Silver. Thanks to strictly enforced building prohibitions, the sea front has kept its original appearance and photogenic fishing village charm. This is the ideal spot for peace and quiet, with the added advantage of many excellent fish restaurants along the small waterfront, where you can sit comfortably next to the gently lapping sea.
Your feet are touching historical ground here, it is the harbor of ancient Myndos

Yalikavak
Turn right on the main road near Ortakent, after 10 km you come to Yalikavak with its small, but busy, center and a harbour where visiting yachts and fishing boats moor cheerfully together. The restaurants in the town center and on the sea front are popular with locals and
tourists alike.
Here is little beach, but it's more comfortable to sit in a waterside cafe and watch the world go by. Several buildings have been tastefully restored in the town; a former water cistern has become a small art gallery and a former olive oil press is converted into a kilim
showroom where visitors are welcome.

Akyarlar
Good camping sites and an ideal surrounding for wind surfers are here. The marvelous scenery of the Greek Aegean islands is just in front of you and it is perhaps one of the safest, sandiest beaches for children on the peninsula. There are several cafes and a tiny harbor. Camping facilities and a couple of small, inexpensive pensions for independent travelers. Still this place has its own tranquil charm

Kizilagac

Torba
This little village is hiding in a charming little bay. Heading North of Bodrum Torba is the nearest village. It is only active during the summer months, but due to the generally high quality of the holiday home developments is a pleasant and relaxed place to visit.
There are also the remains of a Byzantine monastery, and nearby is a small path leading to the next bay, which is ideal for a little light walking.
Ferries to Didim (ancient Didyma) leave from Torba harbor across the Gulf of Güllük.

Türkbükü und Gölköy
These two fishing villages we will mention in one, because they are close to eachother. You find them on the peninsula map east of Yalikavak. These delightful spots are the favorite retreats of many well-known Turkish artists, actors and entertainers who enliven the many small bars and restaurants at night. Several of the more popular restaurants are run by Istanbul couples who have fled the big city.
